Formation of algae is a good sign provided it is green in colour. If it is browinish black, then pay slightly more attention. You can reduce the amount of light or duration of lighting. Do not expect to keep your GF in the aquarium and let nature maintain it for you. Your home aquarium is not an "eco system". You have to maintain that "eco system" in your aquarium which includes feeding, cleaning the tank, washing the filter, controlling the lighting and "gardening" if you have plants in your tank.
Just use the white wool used in the filter to rub it off weekly. I have been looking for sucker fish to do the job but have given up after several stupid attempts.
Unlike most tropical fishes, especially those "waste disposal" fishes, GF requires a relatively higher pH. You will sacrifice one or the other in the long run. You never find the Japanese ranchu breeders keeping any of these sucker fish in their ranchu tubs. Their ranchu tubs are plain and without any decorations. Ask yourself why?
Aeration does not add much oxygen to your tank. It mainly only removes carbon dioxide. Do not make it worse by overfeeding. GF will stop growing when too much hormones are being produced by the GF waste as it decomposes. The best system of filtration is to remove the waste as fast as possible from the aquarium. This is a very complex setup. Look up:http://www.aquaoptima.com. This will give you an idea.
In this system, which is fully computerised it can accomodate up to 250kg of fish per meter cube of water. The fish grows much faster than in the wild. Ask another question why?
Too much information to impart in this forum. That is why a GF club comes in useful. We can all share tips on rearing our precious GF have fun doing it together and also encourage each other. We can also help other new commer to get it right the first time. GF keeping is quite different from other form of aquarium fish keeping.
